TECHNICAL WORKING GROUP ON PLASTIC WASTE MANAGEMENT

On the afternoon of 13 December 2022, PAGASA participated in deliberations on what to do with all these plastic in our environment. The country now ranks highly among nations which contribute the most micro plastics into the oceans affecting the fish that we eat as well as used plastic polluting our solid waste. Chaired by Atty. Dilbert Quetulio/Secretary of the House Committee on Ecology, some 93 participants aired their views regarding Extended Producers Responsibility as the most doable approach in Plastic Waste Management without totally banning plastics in its many usage in the economy. Discussions ranged from the collection of used plastics (and resistance of the public to surrendering these)  to determining non-environmentally acceptable products (NEAP) like plastic straws/stirrers, etc. to the social impact of toxins in waterways during recycling. Various stakeholders from the private/NGO & public sector gave their serious comments, suggestions & reservations. On board at this Meeting were PARMS' Crispian Lao (also a Commissioner at the National Solid Waste Management Commission), Marian Ledesma/Green Peace, Mario Estrada of AFMP, PCAP's very active Jeremiah Sebastian, PCFMI, Zero Waste Coalition, Mother Earth Foundation, et. al.

ISSUE ON POMFRET AND SALMON

The Senate Committee on Agriculture, Food and Agrarian Reform invited PAGASA as a resource person on the morning of 12 December 2022 to the Senate for the issue on salmon & pompano sold in supermarkets/wet markets when in fact for the last 20 years, there's a law which prohibits the selling of these to households (supposedly to protect local fisherfolk from undue competition of imports & smuggled fresh fish). Actually, these two types of fish may be importted given regulated permits by BFAR for use by commercial/industrial establishments only & not to be sold to the public as fresh fish. Pompano aka pomfret or butterfish are locally grown too which complicates regulation.

PAGASA BOARD X'MAS PARTY 2022

On the eve of 9 December 2022, the Board of PAGASA (including their wives) held a Christmas Party at the Manila House Private Club at the BGC. Board Director Robert Go opened Store # 69 at the 2nd class municipality of Hilongos, Leyte earlier that same morning and attended the festivities at night straight from NAIA. The Board missed Dir. Edna Ontiveros, Dir. Fred Gravador & Dir. Kim Reyes that fateful evening.

 

 
AMENDMENTS TO THE CONSUMER ACT

PAGASA's STC attended in the morning of 6 December 2022 the Hybrid Meeting on Amendments to the Consumer Act of the Phils. which was enacted back in 1992. It is headed by the Chairman of the House Committee on Trade & Industry Rep. Marvey A. Mariño. The Meeting concluded that a Technical Working Group (TWG) will be created to tackle proposed amendments by legislators of the Lower House and place under one law the various ordinances that have to do with protecting the rights of consumers as introduced by the various localities since.

PAGASA's STC was guested on 5 Dec. 2022 at the Morning Program of The Daily Tribune called "Gising Na!" over DZRJ online. He was asked by the hosts regarding stability of supply and prices for grocery items this Christmas especially for so-called Noche Buena items. This, in view of the Meeting with the National Price Coordinating Council some four days earlier.

 

 
PAGASA ASSISTS AT MEDICAL MISSION

As part of PAGASA's sense of social responsibility, it donated some grocery items like bottled water to the Medical/Dental Mission of the Phil. Air Force in Antipolo, Rizal on 4 December 2022.

As such, its logo was carried on the organizers' social media posts/materials. Rotary Clubs of Rizal organized the Event which included blood-letting.

 

 
1ST NPCC MEETING UNDER THE NEW ADMINISTRATION AND NEW DTI SEC.

STC attended a whole afternoon session on 1 December 2022 with the Nat'l. Price Coordinating Council (NPCC) under its new Chairman, DTI Sec. Alfredo Pascual. This is his first session as Sec. & the last one for the year 2022.

It was his intro into NPCC and he wanted to learn the ropes. He wanted to hear the various issues afloat. Unresolved were the high prices of white refined sugar, whatever happened to the smuggled sugar raided at the ports, high prices of onions,  unreasonable amount of gov't. imports for fresh produce and the roll-out of Kadiwa Rolling Stores.
